[ARCHIVED] City of Nashua rescinds face coverings ordinance, Board of Health provides recommendations

The City of Nashua has rescinded its face covering ordinance. The Board of Aldermen approved the amended ordinance late Tuesday evening, May 25 and it was signed by Nashua Mayor Jim Donchess on Thursday, May 27.

The amended ordinance, 0-21-065, includes updated guidance for those who have received the COVID-19 vaccine and for those who have not, stating that vaccinated members of the public “are no longer required to wear a face mask covering over their mouth and nose outdoors or indoors where business is conducted unless required by that business, organization, or worksite in Nashua requires a mask.”

COVID-19 is spread from person to person through respiratory droplets, and can spread before symptoms develop. There are many ways to prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, including vaccination, use of face masks, physical/social distancing, and frequent hand washing. The use of face masks prevent the spread of transmission in two ways: 1) Face masks prevent infectious individuals from spreading their respiratory droplets; and 2) Face masks act as a barrier by preventing respiratory droplets from entering into the wearer’s nose and mouth.

It is highly recommended for unvaccinated members of the public to continue to wear a mask “for their own protection and that of others that are fully vaccinated or until appropriate health organization deems it safe to not wear a mask. In accordance with CDC recommendations, unvaccinated persons are recommended to stay 6 feet apart from those they do not live with and are recommended to avoid crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces.”

The ordinance can be found in its entirety on the City of Nashua website: https://www.nashuanh.gov/Archive.aspx?AMID=90

Vaccination against COVID-19 remains an essential step in the COVID-19 response. It is important for people who have not yet scheduled themselves to be vaccinated to do so now as we transition from relying on community mitigation measures to vaccination to control and end this pandemic. To schedule an appointment for vaccination, visit vaccines.nh.gov, call 2-1-1, visit your local pharmacy, or contact your health care provider.
