Frequently Asked Questions


Where can I park during a snow storm?
Parking is available in the parking garages on Elm and High Street.  During an announced Snow Emergency, parking in these garages will be free.  Cars left on the street or blocking the sidewalk will be towed.

If my car is towed, where can I recover it?
The cars are towed to the Four Hills Landfill and can be released with the payment of the fine and tow costs at City Hall’s Traffic Violations Bureau.  The landfill office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Why is my street not plowed first?
The streets are plowed in a set order to maximize efficiency, expediency and resources.  The main roads are treated and plowed first with the collectors second and the neighborhoods third.

Can I get salt and sand at the Street Department?
Yes, salt and sand is available at the Street Department at 6 Riverside Street for residents.  There is a limit of two 5-gallon pails per visit.

What if a plow truck damages my mailbox?
You can call the Street Department at 589-4750.  A temporary mailbox and post will be installed until a permanent repair can be done in the spring.

How do I report lawn damage done by a plow truck?
Lawn damage can be reported to the Street Department at 589-4750.  A work order will be issued and repairs will be done in the spring.

I have heard about a special spring pickup, what is this?
Every April the Street Department has a spring cleanup that is by appointment only.  Residents can set out one truckload of brush, shrubs, picnic tables, doors, and wooden posts for a one-time pickup.  Information is broadcasted with the local media each March, or by calling the Street Department at 589-4750.

How do I report a pothole?
The Street Department has set up a pothole hotline.  Residents can call 589-4797.  The caller should leave a detailed message as to the location of the pothole.  They are also asked to leave their name and phone number to contact if we are unable to locate the problem.  Potholes can also be reported online at: Pothole Report or by sending an email to:

How do I report a missing street sign?
Residents can call the Traffic Department at 589-4700 Monday through Friday 6:45 am till 2:45 pm or report online at: Missing Sign.

How do I report a streetlight that is out?
Residents can call PSNH (Public Service New Hampshire) at 1-800-662-7764 ext. 0.  The operator needs the street address/location and the pole number.  Each pole has a metal plate with the number on it.

Traffic lights are flashing or out, whom do I notify?
Residents can call the Traffic Department at 589-4700.
